Music and Life

Music. These five letters, that have become a huge industry, young hearts becoming one and becoming bands, solo artists and groups. Some songs are like a powerful gust of wind; they come and stir everybody’s heart and are loved deeply, while some are like a cool breeze of air on a hot summer afternoon, soothing your hearts and playing its strings in a happy melody; some come and are quickly forgotten and some stay in our hearts, rooted deep.

For me, music has not just been a source of enjoyment but is also something that inspires me, makes me cry or be happy and reminds me of my past and also my dreams. Many inspiring songs have made it to the top 100 of the Billboard list, like Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’. There are so many such songs, which boost your confidence and make you feel that you are right and the others are wrong (A validation of ourselves, if we can call it so) but how many of these songs have truly changed lives of people? Yes, it has helped people like me stay strong by reminding us that in the end everything is going to be all right and that yes, we can do this!

Travelling from school to home wearing a new dress, which was gifted by her father on her birthday, a young girl frowns as she thinks “Why didn’t anyone compliment me on my new dress? I must be ugly! I don’t have a life.” and many more such scathing thoughts flood her mind. She takes out her iPod and plugs in to Taylor Swift singing and asking her to Shake It Off. She feels a little happier and thinks about how people can be mean, fake and how so many people out there may hate her for being ugly. But all she has to do was Shake It Off. So she gets back home, takes off her dress and ignores her bitter feelings behind the temporary confidence boost Swift just gave her. Her feelings of insecurity are back in no time, stronger than ever.

How long can one hide? How long can you wear that mask of happiness? How many times are you going to listen to that song on repeat just to make yourself happy?
Situations come and go in life. Neither the good nor the bad will last forever. But the phase between them, the journey to the end is long and difficult. People may make you feel happy or sad and situations may make you or break you, but in the middle of this beautiful chaos, you need to stop once in a while, look at yourself and smile. Be grateful. No matter how people behave to you, don’t let them change your identity- not by their words neither by their actions. This reminder can come handy once in a while because there is no one in this world who can believe in yourself more than you and nobody can make you happier than you yourself.
