Monster Rocket Selfie Delights India

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the GSLV Mark III Satellite on 5th June 2017 into the Geostationary Orbit. This is India’s latest satellite to be launched into space with the mission to send a human into an orbit.

It is a heavyweight satellite and its success has reduced India’s reliance on foreign vehicles for launching heavy satellites. This satellite is said to be as heavy as two hundred elephants or five jumbo jets. It can also carry a weight of more than three tonnes into the orbit and can relay television, phone calls, and broadband connections.

When the satellite was launched, ISRO released a video of its launch. Soon the video came to be known as a ‘selfie’ video and Twitter users were very excited. ISRO has often shared pictures of its onboard space missions. The Mars Orbiter has its own Twitter handle. Pictures are posted regularly therefrom. However, the ‘selfie’ post grabbed innumerable eyeballs.

Some Twitter users compare the satellite to ‘Bahubali’. ISRO is actively encouraging and participating in the selfie ‘affair’. Indians were very excited at this immense success of a local space mission. They enthusiastically voiced their views.
